Every week our website dispels or confirms a different Myth, aiming to give you the REAL facts behind many of the common misconceptions about food and nutrition.

Is it true that you shouldn't eat more than 2 eggs a week,
as they're high in cholesterol?

Eggs have long had a bad reputation as a source of cholesterol. It is true that they contain cholesterol, but should only be limited if you know that your cholesterol levels are high or, you have had your gallbladder removed.

Eggs are actually a very valuable source of protein, and are one of the few foods that are classed as a complete protein – that is they contain all the essential amino acids that the body requires for growth & repair. Dietary cholesterol is less important than saturated fat in regulating blood cholesterol and eggs are very low in saturated fat. Our bodies also need some cholesterol to insulate nerves, help maintain cell structure, build strong bones and aid the production of essential hormones.

It’s worth remembering that only 20% of cholesterol comes from food – the remaining 80% is manufactured by the liver.
